In its first part, the paper develops an argumentation based on the thesis that self-referential phenomena can not only be present in music videos in many different ways – as in other types of texts – but that music videos, due to their inherent qualities, are first of all fundamentally and genuinely close to such phenomena and secondly contribute to the formation of an ‘artist self’. In its second part, the paper presents a systematization of these self-referential phenomena in music videos.
