Mobility, praised as a normative principle of modern man in Goethe’s classic novel Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre, has meanwhile become a general phenomenon in our age of globalization. However, those who, for whatever reason, migrate abroad, always bring with them a piece of their cultural heritage. This study of Zhou Zheng’s novel Kleine Sampan aims to highlight the role of literary memory in bringing cultural heritage to life. The author remembers her childhood and youth by means of literature, she expresses in words her longing for her home country with its rich tradition of customs and conventions, but also her love for her mother tongue. In this way, she turns loss into gain, into an opportunity to participate in the culture of her homecountry.
