Abstract

This introductory text explores the theoretical and methodological foundations of the concepts “sign(system)”, “medium”, “communication”, and “(multi-)modality” and their interdependence. It underscores the need to more precisely define these concepts and discuss them interdisciplinarily to foster dialogue among various academic disciplines. The text emphasizes that established text linguistic and semiotic methods are increasingly applied to multimodal phenomena and highlights the importance of praxeological approaches for new perspectives on multimodal practices. The aim of the introduction is to provide a solid theoretical foundation for the subsequent contributions of the special issue and to underscore the importance of transdisciplinary research in semiotics.
