In order to clarify the question of which factors determine the quality and quantity of linguistic and non-linguistic appearances within efficient specialist communication, this article first presents a model of communicative efficiency and various examples of efficient communication. Following this, four general factors of professional communicative efficiency are introduced and exemplified on the basis of Grice’s maxims. Finally, a distinction is made between factors of communicative efficiency on the level of texts on the one hand and on that of linguistic and semiotic systems on the other.
