Anashid describe certain hymns or chants. Over the past few decades, jihadist groups such as IS have increasingly used this practice. In the Islamic States’ media jihad, anashid play an important role; for they bring together three core elements: First, they place IS within Islamic tradition and therefore bestow historical precedent as well as religious authenticity and legitimacy upon IS. Second, they combine Salafi-Wahhabi doctrine and jihadi anashid practices. This is why no musical instruments or rhythm instruments are used in IS anashid. Third, IS anashid integrate pop cultural music and listening practices, which can be seen in the use of effects such as digital reverb and autotune. This synthesis ensures that they reach the broadest possible audience and makes anashid a powerful tool of jihadist groups.
