In order to construct a theoretical framework for the analysis of jihadi propaganda, propaganda can be defined as a specific type of ideological and persuasive communication that is realized in semiotic-textual form. After discussing rhetorics as an appropriate approach, we consider the potentials and limitations of speech acts for the description of jihadi propaganda. However, text functions and textual or rhetorical relations (as proposed for example in Rhetorical Structure Theory) prove to be more useful and adequate in regard of the multimodality and strategic composition of textual “elements”. On this basis, some thoughts on the role of propositional attitude in propaganda and ideas for our own analytical framework are presented.
