The present text is dedicated to the different shapings of the self-optimization topos in therapeutic work and in the coaching industry. Against the background of these two fields, the focus is particularly on the different manipulative engagements with this topos. Manipulation, it is argued on the basis of a neutral understanding of the phenomenon, is a form of influence that can be shaped in both problematic and benign ways. This may become particularly evident when comparing therapeutic manipulations to manipulative tactics often employed by the coaching industry.
