This paper conceptualizes manipulation as a form of influence and applies it to the realm of social media. With a focus on the use of microtargeting in political campaigning the underlying mechanisms of manipulating users online are examined to gain a better understanding of how manipulation and social media are tied together. The paper ends with a short outlook on ethical aspects of (online) manipulation.
