How the Digital Humanities (DH) will be able to do justice to the diverse disciplines and subjects of investigation they are currently pursuing is a hot topic. Again and again it is suggested that the DH face new challenges that will require new methods, tools and bridges between disciplines. It is less frequently acknowledged that DH are not the only initiative to face such a task. Indeed, models for integration across disciplines on the practical as well as the theoretical level are present in other endeavors as well. In particular, this article illustrates the relevance for DH of results of both a practical and a theoretical nature from multimodal semiotics. It is suggested that it is precisely in multimodal semiotics that DH could find a foundation sufficiently broad and comprehensive to advance many of the fundamental discussions currently underway.
