In the last two decades emoticons have become one of the most efficient means for the expression of emotions in written texts. Especially popular are emoticons with the facial traits of laughing and smiling persons. The present article analyzes the results of a comparative study of Chinese and German emoticons with special consideration of the relation between signs and objects.
