The introduction first recalls the initial cause of early U.S. thinking about long-term communication: plans for the final disposal of high-level radioactive waste. The related semiotic considerations were the stimulus for the issue Zeitschrift für Semiotik 6, 3 (1984) with the title Und in alle Ewigkeit … Kommunikation über 10000 Jahre which is reprinted here without changes, supplemented by an extensive new afterword. Some of the contributions of the original issue are briefly addressed, and their reprinting is placed in the context of today's repository projects, especially that of the search for a site for a repository for high-level radioactive waste in Germany.
